~~~ Ronald L. Mallett, Ph.D ~~~
Ronald L. Mallett, Ph.D Professor of Physics, University of Connecticut and author of "Time Traveler: A Scientist's Personal Mission to Make Time Travel a Reality." It is personal because it was love for his father which created, in the mind of a ten year old boy, a dream of building a time machine that would allow him the possibility of preventing his father's death. It is a story that inspires because hope found in the science fiction of H.G. Wells and the science of Albert Einstein, fueled Ronald's intelligence and determination to overcome depression, poverty, racism, and a lackluster interest in school to become quite remarkable. Professor Mallett told an audience of young adults... "My dream helped keep me out of the state pen and got me into Penn State."
His work on black holes earned him acknowledgment as a cutting-edge theoretical physicist. By the late 1990's he found that time travel had actually become a serious theoretical field of study, and in 2002 he finally revealed, to fifty of the world's leading physicists at The International Association for Relative Dynamics Third Biennial Conference, his theory of how a machine involving a circuit of lasers could, theoretically, send a particle backwards in time.   Now he is in the experimental phase of building his prototype, which he believes is capable of creating a closed loop in time. Collaboration with Chandra Roychoudhuri, a research professor of physics at UConn, who will carry out the experiments necessary before moving to phase two, the construction of a time machine... to send subatomic particles and information, not persons! At least for now!
Dr. Mallett has published many papers on theoretical physics, and his time travel research has been featured widely. On his website you may read many reviews of his book, a collaboration with co-writer Bruce Henderson, author and teacher of non-fiction writing at Stanford.  His University site:  www.physics.uconn.edu/~mallett Email to Dr. Mallett
"It's the Journey"
Ronald's journey is exciting, fascinating, and inspirational. Exciting to be Featured in a NatGeo Naked Science episode plus Spike Lee invited him to a the premier of his latest film "Miracle at St. Anna" where he met and spoke with the cast afterwards, an extraordinary event. Next day Spike is back working on Ronald's script! Fascinating is his scientific theory of time travel based on using light, getting photons to go circular and twisting space time. Experiments coming up at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland; Is time and space twisting somewhere in the universe naturally? How do you track the "when" "where" of the effect? Particle lifetimes and a particle detector, one experiment will be detecting the particle before they put it in! (We promise more on that next time.) He loves speaking to young people from across the country, inspiring and encouraging them to pursue their dreams, and particularly touching was a 10 year old he met whose story is similar to his. An adult on the other side of the world was inspired by his book once it was translated into Chinese and Korean. His mom is thrilled with what is happening, and he was happy to tell her story about her strength and courage in his book. His time machine is still in the funding phase, we asked how can he be so patient coping with such slow progress? "I know it's going to happen, it's the journey." And he leaves us with two messages.
NOTE: Upcoming speaking engagements:
Rochester Institute of Technology on Oct 30, open to the public and book signing.
The 19th Annual Chicago Humanities Festival on Nov 8
"Big Bang News!"
Director Spike Lee has taken great interest in Ronald's book and is very enthusiastic about making it into a feature film! Ronald will be a technical advisor as he watches "his" film being made, it's a wonderful quantum leap (no pun intended) and everyone at the university is very excited, so are we! More on the Large Hadron Collider, how heavy particles crashing into each other is different than a car wreck throwing pieces all over the road, an example of how quantum physics is so strange and everything has a probability. Scientists really don't know how the four forces are combined, the collider experiments this year will hopefully reveal some of the mysteries. The results after long painstaking data analysis could affect Ronald's approach on the time machine. Matter can create gravity, so can light which has no mass and is the key to his brilliant theory about time travel. So how can you call something with no mass a particle? When is it matter and when is it not? With his wonderful explanations on these things, we think no wonder he loves teaching so much and creating understanding of the universe in the minds of his students, and we get a taste of that right here on BTO!
"This Highway of Time"
That's how he describes time; the benefits from tapping into this highway could be immense, science still does not know how time really behaves; going to the past suggests the 'grandfather paradox' but then we have the possibility of parallel universes, or multiverses in superspace, so if we do go to the future do we have to make sure it's our parallel future? We will find out when Ronald's dream is a reality; His resolve from the jolt that he cannot change his father's past, is to live his life with pride and courage and fill his days with valued people, times, and works "the only thing we really have is the present moment." His encounter with John A. Wheeler who coined the term 'Black Hole' was not only a great scientist but a wonderful human being, Wheeler's image of the Big Bang is that it expands and with a big eye that looks back at its beginning; why science knows there is missing matter in the universe, and what it could be? The Large Hadron Collider may give a clue this year! "It's important for people to realize their own dreams, as children, people loose their dreams and possibilities are never realized." Of all of his accomplishments certainly one of his greatest is being a role model of "The Impossible Dream". Tune in next time... there is something in the works that he can not tell us yet, but it's big and tantalizing!
"A Scientist's Personal Journey"
Ronald's fabulous journey was triggered by one event, his father who meant the world to him died when Ronald was 10. The deep depression he experienced was alleviated by one of the gifts his father gave him, the love of reading and learning. He discovered 'The Time Machine' by H.G. Wells and the dream ignited... if he could build a time machine he could go to the past and change things to save his father. He became obsessed, "I didn't know whether it was possible or not but that's the great thing about being a child, you have a dream and just simply try to pursue it." Upon discovering Albert Einstein who said time can be changed in a number of ways, he began learning everything he could about Einstein and understood he needed to learn much more. With passion he applied himself, even though he hated math, and became a theoretical physicist, adding significantly to scientific theories while keeping his passion for time travel under the cover of studying black holes. "It wasn't until I made my breakthrough that I came out of the time-travel closet." Giving his first major talk to his peers in WA D.C. and nervous about how it would be received, Ron was touched by quantum physicist Bryce DeWitt's response... "I don't know if you will see your father again, but he would have been proud of you." For Ronald, that was one of his most satisfying personal and professional experiences. He speaks endearingly about the wonderful times with his father, and as an adult he sees the prejudice that is still out there, even in the sciences. He explains his theory for the time machine prototype using light to create gravity and control time. To begin the project he only needs $250,000 of tax deductible public contributions, he has refused funding from the government and Wall Street corporations because it would mean giving up total control and his project would become secret and he wants to keep his discoveries, and in time success, available to the public. Ronald is truly an inspiration, holding a dream that has brought him to the brink of the spectacular!
