~~~ Dr. Roger Nelson ~~~
"I think the universe is wiser than we are and kind of laughs at us occasionally,
we think we've got the answer but we'll get the opposite answer next time we run the same
experiment, I call that the 'coyote,' the southwest Indian name for the joker."
Roger Nelson, PhD, Director and designer of The Global Consciousness Project, also known as the EGG Project, was Coordinator of Research at the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) laboratory, Princeton University, from 1980 to 2002, when he retired. He founded the Global Consciousness Project (GCP) in 1997, and has directed the project since its inception. Roger's broad interests in psychology, physics, philosophy, and the arts have generated opportunities to collaborate with creative interdisciplinary teams at PEAR and elsewhere, developing technologies for studying consciousness and intention. He has a strong interest in the theoretical, philosophical, and practical implications of direct interactions of mind and matter, which help to define the role of consciousness in the world.
In 1993, building on years of laboratory experiments, Roger began using random event generator technology in the field to register correlations of data with special states of group consciousness. This work led to the world-spanning GCP network, designed to look for indications of a global consciousness responding to major world events or great celebrations like New Year’s Eve. After several years of purely scientific focus, with careful research yielding increasingly persuasive evidence, Dr. Nelson has begun to make public presentations about the GCP. The findings imply that we can be creative participants in determining our future, and that we have the capacity and responsibility for conscious evolution.
We are delighted to have the opportunity of bringing to you the verification in Dr. Nelson's research, of the powerful substance of our consciousness, intent, thoughts and actions. Think of the wonderful team that volunteers its time and talent towards this project's goals. One to which we can all contribute in many ways. Here is the project's description:   "It does not have a corporate office, and is a volunteer collaboration involving about 100 researchers, analysts, and egg hosts. Some of us work at universities or institutes in various parts of the world, but these institutions are not funding sponsors or responsible hosts of the project. In particular, this project is not sponsored by Princeton University nor any of its departments or programs. Our funding comes from private donations generously given by a number of contributors."    noosphere.princeton.edu    www.global-mind.org    (PEAR)    Dr. Nelson
"Tracking Global Consciousness"
On its 10th year of collecting global data the GCP has about 65 sites, or "EGGS", all around the world, the latest location is in Peru. One recent spike was March 14th the peak day of rioting and killings during the demonstrations in Tibet. The computer based random number generators (REG's) out there are responding to levels of high emotions such as fear, love, and compassion, when more of us are involved in these emotions the more the REG's react. "I think compassion is the glue that binds us together, my passion is commensurate with yours, an existence is shared with yours, and it has to involve more than one person." There was a striking spike an hour before Benazir Bhutto was assassinated, and interesting patterns afterwards. Is there an "epicenter" when the EGGS react? How far do emotions travel? Do the EGGS react if there is an earthquake in the middle of the ocean as they do when on land? A future project, the Music of the Noospheres, will coherence sound beautiful? At the start of the GCP Roger was inspired by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's notion of a layer of intelligence for the earth he called the Noosphere, which is where the website's name comes from. "The REG's show we are connected in ways we don't directly perceive but which are deeply important." The observations of the GCP may be a message for all of us that in order to survive, humans should be moving towards grasping our wholeness and connectedness leaving behind the tragedy that comes from the "get yours before someone else does" separateness mentality which is very prevalent in our society. "What we think and feel actually matters in the world."
NOTE: You can monitor what the EGGS are collecting, "Basket Status", and primary results at noosphere.princeton.edu and you can see the 'tapestry' and 'the Dot.'   Chardin also said one of our favorite quotes: "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience."
"Making the Planet Smile"
There is the analytical and the esthetic sides of Dr. Nelson's approach in exploring consciousness. "Scientific data is looking through a snapshot in a strange microscope, but then look back at those precious times when we find quite a group consciousness had developed, ...it will be music and poetry that will teach us who we are." Most things in our environment lend to seeing ourselves as "me first" individuals, yet that does not bring us together nor grow community. Interestingly, in his scientific studies, sports for example does not affect global consciousness much, perhaps due to the competition and lack of compassion. The vulnerable memories (easily forgotten) under the stars when everyone goes silent in awe. We each can choose conscious evolution, there's an encouraging wave of small businesses moving towards alternative energy to help the planet. We can preserve that beautiful place in children before the programming sets in, "we all are all that, human beings, a Master will tell you we are looking for the real 'I' ... I am persuaded there is a global consciousness but very young."
"The Beautiful Immediacy"
Dr. Nelson fits right in here with his "EGG for the world"! Sort of like an EEG, but the EGG is Electro-Gaia-Gram, the term invented by his son. So the random event generators (REG) out in the field are called 'eggs' collected into the 'basket.' It's an outgrowth of research on how consciousness interacts with physicals systems in laboratories. Random source experiments were successful in showing that human consciousness can interact with an electronic system. Also being studied is the group consciousness that develops while intending to make the REG change, and in random places where people gather such as shopping centers and casinos where only chaos was expected. The experiments expanded from there to measure large events in the world, such as Princess Diana's funeral, with very interesting results. How are these grand experiments done? In science, the nature of the question matters. Depending on how you ask, a photon is either a particle or a wave.
He speaks of the beautiful immediacy, living in the moment, being here now, but we mostly loose this presence of actually "experiencing the world as it really beautifully is." Imagine a global consciousness where we become co-creative in the world and begin to heal this beautiful planet, save the only home we have, perhaps through creating a planetary smile! Our consciousness is creative and literally changes the world. Learn how he grew towards the world of consciousness from an interest in Judo to the baths of Esalen where synchronicity led to the GCP, involving many and including skeptical physicists. "We see what we look at, or we look at what we see, better to look at what we see." He likes his very busy schedule as he loves what he does, he just has so much fun! Now he's off to Halifax!
