Open Source Ecology - Building tools for replicable, open source, post-scarcity resilient communities
Marcin Jakubowski, Ph.D. bringing a brilliant new concept to BTO!  Do we have to wait 10 years for new alternative energy? No. There is no shortage of resources and energy. What would happen if we used everything we have today? What would happen if we miniaturized civilization? And since we are in an age where information is available all over the globe, why don't we share this knowledge openly with everybody, add a little ancient wisdom, and the model can be replicated anywhere!

Born in Poland, at age ten, during the martial law period of Poland, Marcin left for America. From early on, he wanted to apply knowledge toward a quality life for all. He graduated with Honors from Princeton University in 1995 with a degree in Chemistry and received a Ph.D. in physics, from U. Wisconsin, Madison, in the field of Fusion Energy. He found both experiences lacking in terms of practical application to addressing pressing world issues. He formulated the Open Source Ecology concept in 2003 and development of open source technology has consumed him ever since. He is presently part of a practical social experiment for creating the world's first, replicable, open source, post-industrial global village, with a living laboratory at Factor e Farm. His main interest is ‘evolving to freedom’, and making this option practical for anyone interested in a better world.

Great Comment from a 'True Fan' Supporter of Open Source Ecology who is applying its tools & methods.
"It's a joyous message -- we don't have to go back to the 1880s or the stone age in abandoning mass production. We can produce what we need from the land and have plenty of time for art and self-development. We can all live in a garden. The sense of scarcity and competition that pervades human discourse is soon to be passe. People will look back on the resource conflicts and greed of our age with incredulity. America is a land of people with pioneering spirit and great ability to innovate. We can easily learn to share cool stuff we have learned out of generosity and a bit of competitive spirit. If you go to utube and search on "backyard chickens" or "sprouting" you will see some very informative little vids. More every week! It's happening! What Marcin is doing is setting up a system for Internet sharing the actual detailed designs for the nuts and bolts of food, energy and shelter production. Serious engineering... The open source concept can apply to almost anything. I think you can start to see the implications for society in general -- schools, medicine, professions, government. Nothing will be the same once all technology and knowledge are open-sourced. It will be the true Renaissance."

We are delighted with Marcin and his fabulous concept! Join us as he unfolds the process & its evolution for you ...and because his vision is not
'just theory' you will witness the future being created!
Or go beyond, to not just witnessing it but to actually creating it for yourself now! To becoming part of the future... Now how cool is that!?!  Read & See How.

"The Wondrous Things We Can Do!"

Marcin presents the basic ideas of his San Francisco talk "Economy in a Box" that covers all the recent progress to how to start a civilization on a piece of land, it's about building the world's first replaceable post-scarcity resilient community. You can see his talk here "There is abundant resources, the question is why are we not using it?" Solar concentrators for an example can power the entire USA! How about a mini factory on your desk top? With Open Source things become up to 10 times less expensive, "you can convert the twigs under your feet into the substance of advanced civilization." This is real reasonable technology, there is no scenario where the world comes to an end. It's about evolving humans in a life style that provides all needs with little work. Training "...the new replacement for your standard University education where you actually learn something and become omnipotent as a result!" How to build your Village with 10 people and 8 tools ...and have a totally transforming experience in your life! TRUS FANS can make this happen sooner! And Factor e Farm can use more dedicated visits, contact Marcin if you want to join the pioneers! You will be a co-creator and gain incredible skills from the farm, the people, and the amazing lifestyle.

"The Concept of Abundance"

An update on the CEB press showing what life could be living on local resources, such as the clay on your land, and from it can also come metals and semiconductors! The CEB press can now make 16 bricks per minute, and the compression data on the bricks is impressive! The nearest industrial machine to this costs $70,000 yet you can build the open source design yourself for aprox $3,500 in materials, or it can be built for you at Factor e Farm for aprox $8,000. So do you end up with huge holes on your property? No, you can very easily build a 3 story house by using just the soil dug out for the basement. The CEB Press, tractor, and other machines are being built better and for a 10th of what industrial machinery costs. "We want to set some new trends in this world, abundance through sharing." How life can be easy and how we can avoid "The Lord of the Flies" type behavior people fall into when life gets rough and there is scarcity. The concept of abundance is taking responsibility to meet your needs without taking from others. Creating a generation of communities like this would bring a total transformation. The fact that funds are not raining down on this project reflects the social consciousness of society ...a very strong competitor is human weakness. Eventually people will start to gravitate to this, the CEB Press is ready for its debut and will prove and spread the message. Marcin welcomes suggestions of places to send press releases to get the word out about this first open source project. It can be that with one large container of tools and some land you are abundant and can start living the ultimate dream! Right now our lives are still about surviving, no time for anything else, that creates a gap in people that many do not even realize they have "but once the basics of survival are out of the way then we can look at how we become better people and evolve, we are finding out the whole game is easy to win, once we master our physical environment then we start talking about much more interesting things." It may surprise you that Marcin was very much a 'city person' from the east coast metropolitan area, and look where he is now, you can be there too!

"Wealth without Money"

Each hour with Marcin builds upon our understanding of his fantastic and obviously doable vision of how well we can live with ancient knowledge and modern technology. The CEB Press will be the first finished product, open source plans are available. Dedicated volunteer William from the UK is working on the chicken incubator. The "RipRap" 3D printer can print something that will actually manifest in front of you (the Star Trek's replicator!) and can be built for around $300 in parts, off the industrial shelf a machine like this would cost $10,000! This creates local enterprise, a complete economy on a small scale. Now he wants to master the power components, electronics, power supplies, inverters... any volunteers? Because another key thing to the construction set is the induction furnace which works on electricity. So we are going back into the future to use bio-mass and the steam engine. Ha,ha, you laugh? Get this, he calculates that 1 acre on his land will produce 500 gallons of diesel, 1 gallon of diesel will make 100 lbs of molten metal! "The numbers are there! Does anyone want to come and help us do that?" Education is key too, hence the metaphor of the one room schoolhouse, "when students were actually learning and being empowered as opposed to today's education. To counteract that we created the one room schoolhouse and we are going to bring education back!" By the way Marcin was born in Poland and came to the US at age 10, he didn't learn anything for 4 years, that is how far behind the US curriculum was then. But we don't get stuck in the evil problems, it's about providing solutions that bypass the problems. "Once the thing is built and you can see it in front of you I think that you are entering into like a sanctuary, a very special place where you just cannot help but being touched or spiritually transformed when you see for yourself that this is all possible!" It is about spiritual transformation, people have to change their mind set thoroughly to shift to a new way of empowered living in sovereignty, sharing, clean food, no dependence on outside sources, no 9 to 5 job... hmmmm, could you handle that?

And lots of thanks to Larry, BTO listener who joined Marcin's True Fans! To volunteer at the farm contact

"The Concept of Post-Scarcity Living"

It's about using local resources and creating advanced civilization. "We have the skills, resources, and experience to properly get beyond all the trouble that we see right now on the planet." Marcin says it's a choice that most people are not choosing, "we'd rather wallow in our helplessness..." Technical literacy is a part of this and "we don't need to participate in any destructive activity." Technology is about everything we do from growing food to the CEB brick press, the new prototype tractor, the 'Power Cubit' is an example of inter exchange-ability building a "Lego" type construction between different devices or machinery. After visiting the Amish farm he saw how this could help them too! "This can have a very significant impact of the economics worldwide!" Committed volunteers who care about this project will see for themselves the economic power that they will inherit through the open source business model of sharing. Lost your job? Checkout the Factor e Farm! "I'll convince you right now why you can build a tractor" and he does. Marcin describes the personal transition that comes from doing this project, it is amazing, a mind set of abundance enters where you see you can do anything, new options present themselves every day. "The empowerment, especially when you are in control of it [the technology] you think wow I can really be productive and there is no need for any of these shortages, the artificial scarcity, and the resource of lack starts disappearing." Problems go away by design. Much more including hydraulics used in unusual ways, 20 year batteries, bio-mass and why people laugh at him, the modern steam engine, what's available today in open source digital fabrication, and the power cube on your car. It's about an entirely different infrastructure for humanity, no more commuting to work, ...and we don't have to go back to the stone age!

"The Resilient Communities of Tomorrow"

The first experiment to build a self-sufficient village is on thirty acres in Kansas City area, unique because it is Open Source, all the plans, resources, equipment, can be replicated anywhere! Now we begin to get into the details of exactly how the farms, villages, are created. The Global Village Construction Set and a basic set of infrastructure technologies for meeting all the needs from food, energy, housing, etc., are the ingredients of local sustainable communities. We start with housing in progress using local materials with the open source CEB press and tractor. Marcin describes the learning curve which you can see in action in the video here then how they improved the process, now the machine delivers directly to the brick layers, from machine to the walls. These bricks are stable enough to build 10 stories without reinforcement! Foundations and building techniques are next for a super insulated structure using hay, and a greenhouse for year round growing similar to Chinese green houses that use leaves, that stays above zero year round without any heating. The ways you can get involved in reinventing the economy from the ground up, it's sharing a very old message on the economic front. "It boils down to people enjoying prosperity and a better quality of life.... so if you are excited about creating real economic contributions to humanity, a significant way that you can do that is by coming here for a dedicated project visit." For that . The whole project is run by contributions so you can subscribe to become a True Fan for $10/month. Another way to help both the project and yourself is to purchase the products such as the CEB Press, an affordable machine 5 to 15 times lower in cost than the closest competition and designed to last a lifetime with a fraction of the maintenance needed. "We're talking about devices that serve the people, not people serving in the devices." The CEB Press is a vary serious accomplishment! Marcin warns of the tons of low quality information out there in the Internet. "The basic concept is that we need the best of the best... we used the best techniques and produced something that works." Most of the time the best of the best is not available, it's proprietary "so the point is let's open these things up and make a better world for everybody." Next time will include advanced computer automation, CAD, digital fabrication, and technical illiteracy. Meanwhile, it's all happening in Kansas, just follow the CEB Press yellow brick road...

"Open Source Ecology: a Myth and Paradigm-Buster!"

Marcin gives a great overview of the scope of this project and he is creating a model on a 30 acre farm on a shoestring budget and the concept is priceless! Open source equipment, fabrication, advanced computer controlled, and everything we need is under our feet. To rely on industrial equipment is impossible as it is designed to break. With OSE, humans create and control lifetime designs that are usable for everybody and publish the design. It's not crazy, Marcin is already doing it, and at a fraction of the cost of industrial machinery. "It's so good you are competition to the mainstream." For example, he likens this to Open Source Linux, (the antidote to windows) which is shared openly. "We are the first open business model that anyone can replicate." He explains what led to this idea and suddenly seeing the solution "It's not a fairy tale, it's real today!" Imagine teaching children real skills. The idea is to shrink the scale down to a farm or village that fabricates its own technology to create everything needed for life. It is sustainable, sovereign, and completely independent of the existing supply line system. This model can be replicated all over the world! Imagine having an interconnected network of these models with superior equipment, advance technology, an endless local and healthy food supply, and more! It's recreating civilization at the cost of scrap metal. "Struggling over resources is crazy, we can get beyond that right now!" You can participate with time and/or money and help make this become a world class example of a replicative, self-sufficient village! (visit the list of links above)
