Jerry Davich Metro Columnist with the Post-Tribune Newspaper.   An August 2006 move from having been a featured writer and columnist at The Times Newspapers of NWI since 1996, starting as a political cartoonist and freelance reporter - where he’s garnered several state awards.  Covering a variety of stories, Jerry's focus is the same - Exploring everyday people ... their faults and passions, triumphs and tragedies. Through the years, Jerry has met and written about all kinds of folks, their stories delight, sadden, inspire, and beg us for change.

Jerry, who graduated from the School of Hard Knocks, has attended only a few college courses for kicks or curiosity, along with a beginner class at Ramtha’s School of Enlightenment, where he promptly fell into a mud puddle in 'the field' while blindfolded. To date, he still hasn’t found his card on the fence and refuses to keep trying. His mother Nancy Davich, however, is a long-time student.

Jerry, his wife Cherie, and their children Josh and Ashley, live in Indiana. He also writes freelance stories for various magazines, teaches media classes at a local college, and....

"An All or Nothing Gamble"
That's how some people feel about who to vote for, it's a tough decision, 20% were still undecided. Today Jerry traveled between polling places interviewing voters, most are held at the traditional places, churches, schools, the exceptions being bars that closed for polling. This was recognized as an historic day, the last time Indiana was important was 40 years ago in 1968. People are considering more than issues, this year has put the focus on gender and race. How will the 75 year old black woman vote? Some folks voted only on local elections leaving the presidential nominee blank. Jerry observed fear and ignorance that will not vote for a woman or a black man, regardless of character. He asked us is voting a right or a privilege? Then there's Rush Limbaugh's "Chaos Theory", angry voters in Michigan and Florida, voter apathy still high, and chronic politicians re-elected by rote based on name recognition. "When push comes to shove I think the wrinkled white guy is going to get a lot of votes." Jerry's co-authored book Connections very honestly starts out with an example of his own, it shows how regrets manifest, how to release them, and how to recognize, and so avoid, future regrets. If you feel alone and disconnected you are not alone, loneliness is huge! It's about becoming a better person, not taking things for granted, and filling the primal need to connect. There are answers for you to fill in after each chapter, not a book you loan out, fill it in and keep it, it's *your* book.

"Why?"
Jerry's insightful articles invite contemplation, not so much on the surface of such issues as anti-war talk, U.S. terrorism, and one hopeful voter, but into the deep underlying question of why, where are we, are we doing enough?  Are we doing anything?  What is the reason or the source of such things?  Which brings us to "Sharing views from our speed-train reality," which beautifully demonstrates the tiny view we have of "reality"  --on which we base a great deal of opinion and belief, that seen in its true perspective, can only bring us to a sense of wonderment in the end.

"We are the World"
Congratulations on Jerry's new job -and- there is still time for your real-life "connections" story to be included in his book!  "Connections"  Then on to his stories:   A survey on race relations, asking for directions at "Ground zero for white fear;"   a creepy town, or maybe Jerry was the creepy one;   all the lonely people.... write to Jerry with what you discovered if you took him up on his challenge of reaching out to lonely people;   so who's the mentally handicapped here anyway;   and a murdered Muslim... grief transcends cultural differences.

"Connections"
Jerry's upcoming book "Connections" is all about you!   Discover how you can have your story included at www.connectionsbook.com  Then we go to the stories... heroin addiction, a junkie in the family, is it an addiction or a disease?   And young women being cool, being intoxicated... "Every teenager should see the film "To Sir With Love".   What are young people missing, the self worth factor?   Is our society a fear-based cult?   Why fear making a mistake?   A bit about wine, and our allegiance to the flag and 4th of July, ritual or habit?  Do we even think about what that means symbol means?

"Bones of Contention"
Drive-thru disposable war...  do we know what is really going on?  Americans: Ignorant, arrogant, & oblivious of the world's view.  A soldier back from Iraq who witnessed a tank rolling over two children and not even stopping - you didn't hear that in the news did you?  Your home town, nostalgia, the good ol' days, hanging onto the past...  yeah, but sometimes there are bonds formed that are worth remembering.  Why just now is the immigration nerve being tweaked?  An issue that polarizes people and brings multitudes into the streets.  Also... young students objecting to Jerry's assumption of their motive for demonstrating.

"The Invisible Knapsack"
Jerry presents a smorgasbord, pun intended!  Considering himself a professional eavesdropper who admits to being a "dashboard diner" while driving.  Besides dipping the remote control into the milk, he takes us around food cravings, racism and invisible beliefs, tradition and pirohis (notice there's food again!), changing the scene to get happy, Not!  Do teens read the newspaper?  Wow, was he surprised by the profound responses from 8th graders on up!  And an upcoming story, "Clinging to the Islands of Difference" (you heard it here first).  "My favorite story is always the one I'm working on!" he says.  Plus Jerry's first book will be coming soon!

Five of his recent articles, slices of human life conveyed in his poetic and unique style.  Stimulating conversation from the controversy stirred by his article about a woman whose husband tried to kill her with a bomb in their car  ...the plight of women born into unworthiness and discrimination for centuries...  feelings carried in the genes?  And, is there such a thing as an accident, are we compelled to place blame?  A 35 year old secret kept by a burdened mother; and traveling the world with Mother Mary, "Don't touch her, she will touch you."

BTO listeners write to Jerry, the government requesting donations (from us) to rebuild New Orleans?  Take your friend to the doctor day??? (Don't get us started!)  His recent wonderful columns on prayer, Iraq, carpe diem, and The Time Gambler.  Turning the tables again he's asking us questions!  Do we pray, what would we do if we had all the time and money in the world, and why does the effect of an epiphany and new understanding wear off for some and not others?  Fear?  Americans are pretty much trapped in their dualistic false beliefs.  And time... it's much better to be out of it!

Our "Poetic Journalist" ...he shares two recent beautifully written columns, "Better Parenting Through a 'String' Theory" (a personal story) and "Loneliness: Society's Quiet Affliction".  How does it effect his life covering such stories as that of holocaust survivors?  Also "...saving for your emotional 401K!"  and by the way ...who is interviewing who here???

Jerry asks "Why invite me on BTO?"...  well he is a columnist who observes and finds people with extraordinary stories!  Stories we would ordinarily never hear...  the folks who refuse to divulge their SS# and are paying dearly for it, a man who says he has a cure for cancer, an elderly woman dying with grace, and his excellent article about the people who drive the "getaway car" in child abuse...  Jerry writes the stories from the front lines of life.   Synchronicity also played a part in the invitation...  we discovered his mother has been a student of RSE for 15 years, and about Jerry's one experience of RSE, "I found gold there!"
