~~~ Chorus Bishop & Leilani Meng ~~~
Chorus was given his name by his parents' spiritual teacher at birth. Throughout his childhood he was told always to remember that he is more than what he looks like and that was what to remember to be happy. In his mid teen years Chorus began to study the teachings of his parents' spiritual guide. He took up the practice of meditation and the inspection of who or what he really is behind personality, behind the mind and behind the body. "I acquired a curiosity about perception and experience, Not perceptions or experiences in themselves, but the actual process of the two"
[Chorus "Catching Air" at Monterey Budokan Dojo with Sensei Julio] Chorus says that what he found and is continuing to find "Are not answers to any questions at all, but far more obstacles and contradictions in him than I ever imagined...it seems as though I am moving backwards, I noticed that many, if not all of the problems and limitations that come with being human are actually one's own activity"... That sound like a person who is moving forward, especially a very young person! Chorus has impressed and delighted us, we acknowledge and salute him and all the fantastic young people like him. One of them being Leilani Meng, a friend of Chorus, raised in the same spiritual community. Leilani's parents came to it when she was seven so she has a different story to tell. She is a wise and lovely young woman whose movements reflect both her early dance, and her current Jujutsu training.
Chorus has a history with martial arts since age eleven. His father, a black-belt in Seibukan Jujutsu, began teaching him the art. In 1997, Chorus demonstrated his abilities in the art and received the rank of first degree black belt, marking a right of passage from boy-hood to man-hood. (Rights of Passage are something we feel are so important, and sorely lacking in our society) Mid way through high school he attained second degree. He finished high school in 2001 and resumed his study and training in Seibukan Jujutsu at the Monterey Budokan. He has been participating in what is known in Japan as an Uchi-Deshi program where he lives as a full-time student in the training center, training six days out of the week from 1-3 classes per day. In 2002 Chorus was promoted to fourth degree black-belt!
