"Music, Dissonant Allegory, and Chaos"
The desert in AZ has finally cooled down and the horses are excited and playing their version of Tag with joy, one horse plays Hide-n-Seek! Oh the intelligence in nature must give one pause, eh? Then to music, archaeological finds indicate belief in the supernatural in every culture, music was truly a universal language including the birds, whales, all of nature. This auditory part of our brain is not a part of our speech areas, ponder that. His wife's wisdom on music, and Allan's story of a talk he was asked to give on music --to neurological brain surgeons. We play Karriem Ali's piano peace titled "Dissonant Allegory" and Allan has much to say about that, the reaction to dissonant tones and how sound can speak to our soul and emotions, there's information there. "We grow up with our own era of music and that is our music for life." Much music must be kept underground in many countries, and a summery on the French revolution. A study on the popularity of Sushi, cell phones, cultures, food an preferences, and bringing Monsanto into the kitchen. Then chaos, did you know there are taste receptors in the lungs? Why? What is Asthma and how does it work? A whole new field is emerging as asthma increases in children, it can be fatal, and it's a big deal in the schools. The chaos of which child has asthma and which not, and what's up with the sudden peanut allergies? A camping story with an allergic kid and there are bees around...

"Billions of Galaxies, Neurons, and Sperms"
Why does the brain put out serotonin and then take it back? We start with an analogy of billions of galaxies and how minute we are, as are the billions of cells in the brain, its network however is not like Internet connections. Depression and how drugs such as serotonin reuptake inhibitors work and how they should be used. What happens in the brain during "slow motion" accidents, and being put to sleep with anesthetics. It's all about neuro chemicals and how we are wired. What about our "junk" DNA? Epigenetics, gene expression, and profound examples of how our genes are modified by our experiences. Stephen Hawking's new theory about the Big Bang. If you die does your universe disappear? What's behind you right now? Why the brain puts you to sleep, and what happens if you stop dreaming. Then, with his deepest apologies to the environment he confesses his love of high speed cars, terrible for the environment, but when he hears 'Start your engines!' Wow! "Talk about a mind altering substance!" Why cell phones shouldn't be used while driving, no it is not "like talking to someone in the car." How and why the brain reacts differently in what may appear to be similar actions.

"Our Polarized Country & Understanding Orgasms"
From the days of house calls and getting your tonsils out (which turned out to be a very bad idea), postwar boom, segregation, and since then we went backwards in many ways, however there is more awareness, understanding, on many issues---yet the country is polarized to a point where there is no compromise. Compromise is good, it's how we reach solutions. But politicians don't care about the effects of their choices, they have to win--when will the bickering stop. The moment the Supreme Court ruled that corporations, who don't give a hoot about individual rights, have freedom of speech was the moment democracy went up for sale, corporate freedom of speech is simply leverage, big money can now flow freely to the politicians who bow to the corporations. People are angry but where can they express it... "America is really at risk to become a plutocracy..." On that note, we cheer things up and look at orgasms! Yes, Dr. Allan has fascinating information, about the differences in gender regarding orgasms and what each is actually seeking. From the very young to teenage attitudes to adulthood. Seeing what areas light up in the brain during orgasm, each gender wired very differently, the amygdala and what happens in a woman's body, the profound effects of bonding, the "cuddling" hormone, and sexual preferences. Why addictions such as drugs and sexual deviations escalate with an example of how young girls will fall into submission to please their boyfriends. But what really paints sex in a different light here is understanding the bonding of the different scenarios in each gender, both of whom are after something very different, which brings us to civil rights for women, men, gays, etc.. "Civil rights is all about you are seeking a different thing than I am." And that's how an orgasm can lead us to the Constitution of the United States. This hour could probably save relationships or create very nice new ones!

"A National Epidemic"
First an update in the ever evolving AZTEC, simulation, robotics, and medicine lab designed to reduce the 3rd cause of death, medical mistakes which are now at the rate of a 747 falling out of the sky everyday. Now let's talk about happiness, what is it? He explains what goes on in the brain, the happiness center, what makes you happy, how kids on violence are affected and what a difference a horse makes! Being connected to fundamental things, people, animals, nature, that really lights up your pleasure center. Lack of happiness is a national epidemic and how we are easily moved away from being happy. The state of suspension when kids play and are totally absorbed by it, then at some point joy gets externalized... "now joy is 'out there', I have to find it out there." What's missing? Our elders get it but they are no longer in our tribe. What we think about life and age, what is old age, does it depend on how old you are? "Joy is the natural state your body wants to have."

"The Missing Ingredient"
Three distinct subjects: First is the concept of "Breaking" horses, we wanted to know about that! It isn't what we see in films, the "Horse Whisperer" is not how it is done. He explains it came from Flooding, a frightening psychological method originally used on prisoners. In contrast he explains Natural Horsemanship techniques and the difference in horses exposed to both. Next, 'right ring and left wing' - express an opinion and you are instantly labeled as belonging to some group. People are not really listening to each other, it's this or that and nothing in between. How do we listen to opinions we don't share and how do we get to the truth under these perceptions? Examples are the gulf spill, corporate greed, deadlocked politicians, and frustrated voters. Where is this going to get us? Last, the missing ingredient in medicine is the principle of the spiritual connection (one could say it is missing in the first two subjects as well). He explains the ideal behind health care delivery... with the gulf spill as example of a terrible wound, underneath all that damage is a spiritual principle of returning this planet back to its pristine protected state, same as the ideal in medicine for people. "When the planet is protected we and all other life forms on this planet are protected... when we endanger the Earth we endanger ourselves." The host of dangerous things going on, stories and examples. "The individual's choice is the only thing that really changes the world."

"Homo Insanicus"
His thoughts about gardens, now much different from when he was a kid and how productive they can be in incredible small places. A critical element is growing our own food and being more connected. Think about the 100 mile diet, farmers markets booming -we're talking real food here. About connections we have now; how buying a cheap tomato from Bolivia cheats our neighbors, what drives the AG industry, killing a world treasure in the Gulf while BP is making profits and giving bonuses to executives and shareholders... and what's with Detroit? The average SUV spends 99% of the time on asphalt! We have gotten very disconnected from the garden to the gulf. Advertising and the brain, emotions, the art of selling. How the Internet fits in the scheme of things, and the differences between humans and animals, who has the intelligence? The wild places are a great expression of democracy, nature reprograms us, Allen is concerned for the kids who are missing a beautiful world that belongs to anyone in exchange for their virtual world with it's dangers. And about keeping wild animals captive, it isn't like "Flipper" in the 60's, swimming with the dolphins has a dark side... can we now have enough respect for them to let them go? A schizophrenic situation in Arizona regarding polarized issues over SB 1070, the borders are very dangerous, citizens live in terror, and there's no common ground.

"Being Aware of Our History"
The doctor is in the house and he prescribes doses of BTO to avoid side affects! His blog on the history of the great recession/depression that wiped out everybody including his parents, and he remembers their stories. Now we have recession again, what have we learned? "We have a short memory, and we have a Wall Street that we allowed to go out of control, and credit card debt because we wanted what we couldn't afford." So how do we approach this now, and what are we leaving to our children? He is very concerned about the legislation in Arizona regarding immigration, now there is a lot of fear in the air, and law enforcement is in a terrible dilemma. "You can judge a country by how it treats its minorities." He is an advocate of the 2nd Amendment, but, AZ no longer requires a license nor fingerprints for concealed weapons? Stories exemplifying the effects of this, changes being made based on the negative, what the Constitution is about in the midst of freedom, and when the terrorists win.. The American Dream and Founding Fathers who knew we would inherit a great a challenge. "The model of our Forefathers was designed to evolve consciousness!" Horse consciousness is a great example. The millions elsewhere in the world who share our values, yet we are so ignorant about the life they live, and the contributions made to our culture. Remember the movie "The Russians are Coming"? A little story and its culmination is a wise Indian's assessment of human beings... "yes they are beautiful --and they are liars."

"Breakdown to Breakthrough"
People are angry, but anger never solves a problem. A Zen Buddhist's advice to Allan "when someone makes you angry you should thank them for pushing your buttons and showing you how much you have to learn." And Allan putting it into practice, with his teenage son... difficult but so worth it, for both. With so many national issues going on we are all getting our buttons pushed and how people respond. Instinctive reactions in the reptilian brain and how advertising works by using this. He writes to say (his Blog) 'hey, here's a problem I'm struggling with, such as people loosing their homes which are left abandoned, and is anyone going to intervene with common sense?' New book coming in June 2011 "Right Mind Right Horse: The Science Behind the Human / Horse Connection and How to Unlock the Spiritual Secrets of the Round Pen" Even if you have never met a horse this book is for everyone. Principles of living in the moment, you have to leave your past to be with a horse. Then health care reform aka disease management system where doctors don't get a penny for making & keeping people healthy... "in fact the doctor that prevents disease is in a way a traitor to the medical industry because he's keeping patients out of health care!" There's no profit in preventing sickness. "We have to get away from doctors and hospitals, the community is what we have to focus on." Common sense examples of Fire Department clinics, how food and local farmers are part of health care. How the Pharms got so bad and why we are on the verge of terrible problems with MRSA the new super bug, it's everywhere, and the problems with antibiotics, another dilemma we created. The marketing of Rx on TV changed everything and that's dead wrong. McDonald's, school food, and kids, time to pull together and get our quality of life back! More on health insurance and the bottom line, plus his remarks on tough decisions that may trigger some angry e-mail!

"Chaos, Bliss, and Being Alive!"
Allan is recovering from the third spinal surgery, so how is your 2010 so far? Good, so he talks about chaos, the six degrees game and how the grid is not evenly distributed, networks organize too, so you go through hubs or points of organization and it is self designed, not random, look at Mother Nature. He is drawn to nature, specifically whales as they have the largest brains and maybe we can find a way to encounter this beautiful intelligence. "We haven't done very well so far, are we smart enough to catch up with this intelligence? The farther away from nature we get the less happy we are." And getting into that "Flow State" it's very good for you, where there is no clock no time, a gift children have, use and enjoy but we 'grow up' and lose it. What makes us happy? Bliss... is in the present moment. How major surgery was for him and that state of still being alive! Naturally happy people stories and oh if it could be a worldwide attitude! New book coming: How horses can teach us spiritual principles, (they short circuit our left hemisphere). And several great stories from AZTEC, multiple victim simulation and then the real thing happened, on another occasion a medical student recognized what doctors missed and saved a life from the AZTEC training! Also great innovations, tiny but making a huge difference. Now he is off to Ireland to help save thoroughbred horses, the Irish love horses. And he informs us our own iconic wild horses of America, the Mustang herds, are loosing land.

"Choosing the Heart over the Chip"
Stunned by the enormity of medical mistakes ranking as the 4th cause of death in the US and costing up to 40 billion dollars per year, Allan was compelled to do something about it. ASTEC is the result; an outstanding simulation lab as close to reality as technology can get. It is the #1 center in the world for simulated tissues (no animals are used) where 'disasters' are created just as in flight simulations. The 'Miracle on the Hudson' pilot had practiced the scenario he experienced over 100 times. ASTEC is high fidelity simulation with currently seven manikins that talk, breath, and bleed... just enough for Allan's plan of a "real" ER multiple victim car crash! Participants take this very seriously as they sweat through each medical crisis gaining knowledge, experience, and confidence to deal with real patients. What about medical equipment failure at a critical moment? That happens all the time so is included. But what is happening in the "real world"? Why do simulations like this threaten the status quo?; the disadvantage of the parallels between technology developed for war and that being developed for operating rooms with disembodied doctors; how many surgical errors go to court, and what if ORs had digital, video and sound, recordings? "That would push things in the wrong direction, there's a growing spiritual illness in medical care for several reasons. Do we turn to a compassionate direction (the heart) or the high tech direction (the chip) which by itself is lacking. --We are whole human beings, we are not organs and diseases, the next generation of physicians show hope for change, the question is can we evolve quickly enough?"

"Medicine, Horsemanship, and Beyond"
Our multi-talented neurosurgeon is also an accomplished horseman, one who goes way beyond Hollywood's "Horse Whisperer." He observed horses behavior and then his own in a video, he realized how precisely they were responding to his body posture and energy. Being so aware of the subtleties of non-verbal communications in nature, he created a sanctuary for horses on land they found and named Rancho Basque, a place so beautiful as to be sacred. The horses are his teaching partners in two innovative training course for medical students and patients. They learn how to tune into the horses with projected intention and how that relates with human patients in practicing medicine. "Learning how to make a horse jump from 35 feet away opens up doors of awareness." At RSE he showed how to make a horse move from a distance, very similar to the blindfolded archery practiced there "this shows what our brains are capable of," and the empowering effect on ADD and even cancer patients. This hour you will gain insight into intuitive nature hidden under language, ego, victimization, and separateness, as he takes us into the world of horses, the "Magical Big Dog", stories of bonding, endless forgiveness, and what lurks in the ever present moment discovering our own mostly forgotten innate power.

"The Spiritual Journey of a Reluctant Surgeon!"
[The working title of his book] How his peers are reacting to "The Scalpel and the Soul" a book that not even he in his 25 years, as a neurosurgeon, would have thought he would write. An extraordinary look behind the scenes of doctors who daily see things they can't explain, not easy for a group who is 'sort of the ultra right wing conservatives of medicine'. Stories of people marshaling their spiritual powers that contradict the expected results; "what's the big secret, why can't we talk about these things?"; the difference in perception -the power and majesty of nature captured by Ansel Adams yet unnoticed by others; polar explorer Admundsen and a shaman, another example of perception; a patient medically rendered "dead as a doornail" yet later mentions 'an odd memory' ... a detailed account of the medical team's conversation, so where was the memory stored? There has to be some Holy Grail of consciousness outside of the brain; ASTEC, a 'flight simulator' for the medical profession; world-famous brain surgeon Wilder Penfield; a dead rabbit on the road leading to intuition and wonder that saved a patient's life, "a good scientist doesn't ignore so many clues." Medicine is spiritually ill, less than 7 minutes with the surgeon is not enough to know the patient - Dr. Allen attributes many mistakes to this. Do you know who your doctor is? A pertinent and amusing story of a world-famous cardiologist, a patient, and a third year medical student. "The universe is filled with power and energy and it's trying to help us" and oh yes, about those hospital gowns....
